Taking small steps to become healthier will yield huge changes in our everyday lives. One step that is most often overlooked is getting enough sleep and rest. Another small step you can take towards becoming healthier is by adjusting eating habits. A very important step that is also sometimes forgotten is drinking enough water and staying hydrated. These three steps may seem small and unimportant, but they are critical to one’s health and happiness.

The world today is hectic. Everybody has busy schedules, appointments to make, children to care for, and jobs that take up most of our time. In the chaos, the need for sleep and rest is ignored. There simply just isn’t enough time to sleep. This lack of sleep and rest is having negative affects on peoples health and happiness. It is crucial to allow your body time to sleep and rest. Sleep helps your brain function like it should. Studies have shown that a lack of sleep alters activity in some parts of your brain connected to decision making and emotions. In addition to your brain functions, sleep also helps your body stay physically healthy. Sleep levels affect how your body reacts to insulin; sleep deficiency will result in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which could eventually increase your risk of diabetes. Your body’s immune system also relies on sleep to stay healthy. Without your immune system, your body would not be able to fight off bacteria, viruses, and other things that may threaten your health. Ongoing sleep deficiency can change the way your immune system responds, so you may have trouble fighting even common infections. Sleep deficiency is harmful on a much larger scale than most people might realize.

Your body needs many different nutrients to maintain itself throughout the day; by eating a healthy and well-balanced diet, you can supply your body with the nutrients it needs. Getting proper nutrients helps build and strengthen bones, as well as regulate body processes. A healthy diet can also lower your risk of developing a range of chronic diseases. For example, eating more fruits and vegetables can help lower blood pressure. Healthy eating is one of the best things you can do to prevent and control many health problems.

Drinking water and staying properly hydrated is essential to staying healthy and happy. You must drink water to replace the large amounts of water that your body loses each day. Fluid loss happens from skin evaporation, breathing, urine, and stool. When your water intake doesn’t equal your output, you will become dehydrated. Dehydration can cause headaches, muscle fatigue, and nausea. Your body will work more efficiently when hydrated. Adequate water intake increases energy, relives fatigue, improves skin complexion, maintains digestive regularity, and boosts immune system performance.

Making such small changes may seem unimportant, but you will be amazed at the results. Taking the time to take these three, small steps can help make you more healthy and happy in your everyday life.
